I DM-ed for the first time last year and this issue came up in my campaign. I would love the hive-mind's thoughts on it.My warlock player claimed that she didn't need line of sight when she cast Eldritch Blast.
I was then out-voted unanimously by the party that she didn't need line of sight. (I wanted everyone's input before I made a ruling, and I figured if I was outvoted I can easily change things around.)Eldritch Blast'A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage. The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three beams at 11th level, and four beams at 17th level.
You can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones. Make a separate attack roll for each beam.'
(Range 120ft)Line of Sight Rule' A Clear Path to the Target: To target something, you must have a clear path to it, so it can't be behind total cover. If you place an area of effect at a point that you can't see and an obstruction, such as a wall, is between you and that point, the point of origin comes into being on the near side of that obstruction.' Their line of reasoning is that eldritch blast streaks toward a creature within range will get em'. Meaning Hit or Miss, so long as the target is 120ft away and you are aware of said creature, you can hit it. Other spells like magic missile, ray of frost and acid splash all say that you need to see the creature in order to hit it.
Firebolt has similar wording to Eldritch blast, so I suspect that these players would interpret it the same. BUUUTTTT.It still sounds iffy to me. What do you guys think?. First off: your game is not a democracy. YOU are the DM, YOU decide if it needs line of sightOh weird, my last paragraph got deleted where I addressed why I chose to vote on the issue rather than rule on it.
Basically I wrote that I chose to vote on it to keep my friends happy. I've ruled against other stuff before (ex.
Same player tried to cast haste and have two spells per turn, ruled against that), and I allowed my bad guys break the rules plenty of time. My upgraded Demon Princes were able to cast leveled spells as actions and legendary actions rather than limiting the action economy to one leveled spell and one cantrip.). This is true, but if you wanted to ask the party what they thought then that's fine. You could just RAW read it and say that yes you need to see the target, because Eldritch Blast mentions a target and the rule is there to cover a lot of spells at once. However, Eldritch Blast is (kinda) meant to mimic what the martial classes do. I can see you allowing it, and I can see you not. I either don't let my players shoot at things they can't see or I make them roll a luck die (d20) to see if they happen to shoot in the right direction.
And they can NEVER shoot around corners. Making an Attack (PHB 193-194)Whether you're striking with a melee weapon, firing a weapon at range, or making an attack roll as part of a spell, an attack has a simple structure.1. Choose a target. Pick a target within your attack's range: a creature, an object, or a location.2. Determine Modifiers. The DM determines whether the target has cover and whether you have advantage or disadvantage against the target. In addition, spells, special abilities, and other effects can apply penalties or bonuses to your attack. If there's ever any question whether something you're doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack.Cover (PHB 196).A target with total cover can't be targeted directly by an attack or a spell, although some spells can reach such a target by including it in an area of effect.
A target has total cover if it is completely concealed by an obstacle. In other words, because EB is a spell attack (it requires a ranged spell attack), then a target can benefit from cover. If the target is behind total cover (it is completely concealed by an obstacle like a wall), then it cannot be targeted by an attack. Hopefully this will help explain to your players why 'a target you can see' is not included in the description for EB.It is possible to make an attack against a creature you cannot see. For example in darkness/magical darkness with no way to see, or if a creature is invisible. If Eldritch Blast was only usable on target you can see. Then you could not attack creatures in these scenarios, which doesn't make sense. Eldritch Blast is essentially a magical revolver that deals force damage.
You don't get bullets that pass through walls, but if a creature happens to be in between you and that wall you can still hit them.
Eldritch Blast. Usage:, Toggled. Prerequisite: Level 1DescriptionThis is a toggle feat. When you toggle it on, your basic attack, regardless of weapons held(except for wands), becomes a ranged magical attack that hits a single enemy. It does not cost spell points or hit points; only time, much like swinging a weapon.Eldritch Blast deals 1d6 Force damage at level 1, and increases by +1d6 at Warlock level 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20; for a total of 6d6 at level 20.
Eldritch Blast damage scales with a percentage of. Eldritch Blast criticals are based on magical stats: Critical Spell Chance and Critical Spell Damage.

Fiend: Fire / Fort half. Great Old One: Acid / Will halfEldritch Blast is treated as a 9th level spell. The DC (for the pact damage) is the same as a ninth level evocation spell: 19 + charisma modifier + evocation focus effects. It is not affected by metamagic feats.
Spell resistance does not stop Eldritch Blast, and neither does Antimagic. You move at full speed while casting Eldritch Blast, unlike most spell casting.ShapesThe default Eldritch Blast goes in a straight line. It doesn't home in. Enemies that move may avoid it. Eldritch Blast Shapes alter how you attack enemies.
Single target attacks are generally going to do higher damage per creature than AoE, for instance. These shapes toggles are available in the enhancement trees. Single target (basic attack). Chain. Cone. Point-blank AoE (aura around Warlock) An overview of that increases Warlocks' Eldritch Blast is available.Different shapes scale differently with Spell Power:.
